Located on Mitkof Island, an isolated rural community located in central Southeast Alaska's famed Inside Passage, the Island can only be accessed by boat or plane. The territory includes Petersburg Borough, Hobart Bay and Kupreanof Island and covers approximately 3,800 square miles. PMC has been serving the Community for over 100 years. Though the facility has been well maintained and has benefitted from small improvements over the years, a Master Plan completed in 2020 has determined that the supporting infrastructure is at the end of its useful life. With the support of the Borough of Petersburg and community, planning has been underway to construct a new building for the hospital. The project will be completed in several phases over the next five years. Phase 1 activities include the land acquisition, design and site development work. The Borough of Petersburg is providing the site for the new hospital, and the CDS funding will help complete the activities to prepare the site for construction. The construction phase is scheduled to commence in 2024.
