Girdwood Health Clinic, Inc. 131 Lindblad Ave, Girdwood AK 99587 Tawny Buck, CEO 907-783-1355 t.buck@ghcak.org www.girdwoodhealthclinic.org HRSA-22-134 Congressional Directed Spending (CDS): Construction Projects $800,000 Girdwood Health Clinic (GHC) ) is a non-profit Community Health Center created from a grassroots, community-based effort. The clinic is located in Girdwood, Alaska. Girdwood is a resort community with approximately 3,289 year-round residents, along with thousands of visitors and seasonal workers who visit during the tourist seasons. Population to be served: While Girdwood is technically within the boundaries of the Municipality of Anchorage, the community is located in a rural area 30+ miles from downtown Anchorage with no public transportation and a dangerous commute between the communities. As a result, it is imperative that primary healthcare services are provided locally. GHC’s Mission is to provide healthcare to all visitors and residents of the Turnagain Arm communities of Girdwood, Hope, Bird Creek, Indian, Sunrise and Portage regardless of the ability to pay. Services: GHC’s Core Purpose is “Providing primary, wellness, and urgent health care services, regardless of ability to pay”. GHC is a Community Health Center funded in part by HRSA’s §330 CHC grant program. GHC provides comprehensive medical and behavioral health primary care services to all and offers discounts based on family size and income. On-site services also include CLIA-waived testing and X-Ray. GHC has been an important point of contact for COVID-19 testing and vaccinations during the Public Health Emergency. Need: GHC’s current small, outdated clinic facility was originally designed as a rural post office and is in dire need of replacement. A new clinic construction project was in the planning stages when GHC became the recipient of a $5 million grant from the Municipality of Anchorage to kick-start the project. GHC raised additional funds
through foundation grants and community fundraising. However, the total raised was not enough to cover the cost of the entire construction project. Due to the expected funding shortfall, the construction project was divided into Phases. Phase 1 is fully funded, and construction is underway. GHC is requesting CDS funding to complete Phases 2 & 3 of the facility construction project. The new construction project will provide expansion and improvements for integrated medical and behavioral healthcare services in a state-of-the-art facility. The new facility will be specifically configured for healthcare services which will greatly enhance clinical operations. Total square footage will increase to 7,350 in the new clinic. Phases 2 & 3 comprise a total of approximately 2,000 square feet. Phase 1 of the construction project began in July 2021 and is expected to be complete in June 2022. At that point all clinical and administrative operations will move into the new space while Phases 2 & 3 are under construction. The entire project is expected to be completed by November 2022.
