Northwest Indian Treatment Center: Recovery Support Project - The Squaxin Island Tribe’s Northwest Indian Treatment Center (NWITC) is a 33-bed residential treatment facility that serves American Indians from tribes located in Oregon, Washington and Idaho who have chronic substance abuse relapse patterns related to unresolved grief and trauma. After completing the 45-day treatment programs at the NWITC, clients and alumni often return to their home area where they are exposed to situations and people that often put them at higher risk of using substances again. A safe home and community life and post-treatment resource coordination are especially critical for recent NWITC treatment graduates/alumni who are returning home. The target population for the project includes Native people in the NW region with a history of substance who are over 18 and have completed or are in the process of completing the residential treatment program at the NWITC. Through Indian Health Service project funding in previous years, NWITC has successfully integrated post-treatment recovery planning and resource coordination into the treatment programs to prevent relapse—this has resulted in NWITC achievement of goals to decrease treatment slots filled by relapse patients and to increase patient-reported sobriety and other measures of wellness. Peer support recovery coaching infrastructure has been developed in several tribal communities with the support of NWITC. However, there is still a high incidence of community substance abuse in Native people in the NWITC catchment area, and limited funding to support the planning, infrastructure development and coordination of substance abuse relapse prevention, treatment and aftercare services. The purpose of this project is to address gaps in treatment, aftercare and relapse prevention capacity by enhancing culturally-focused approaches for substance abuse treatment and improving the network of recovery support services in clients’ home communities after treatment. Goal 1: Improve, expand and enhance networks of aftercare services and care coordination. Goal 2: Improve, expand and enhance access to culturally-infused residential substance abuse treatment services. Goal 3: Improve, maintain and enhance the referral process for post-treatment recovery support services in clients’ home communities. Goal 4: Improve and enhance the Peer Support Recovery Coach network. Goal 5: Sustain or improve patient outcomes related to relapse and post-treatment community integration, and address long-term community substance abuse treatment, aftercare, and relapse prevention needs. The project will promote client-centered recovery by improving the quality and intensity of culturally-infused, individualized treatment, aftercare and relapse prevention services. The project will also enhance and expand the development of the post-treatment peer support recovery coaching components and enhance comprehensive referral relationships with recovery support service providers in Northwest Indian Treatment Center clients’ home communities, building and enhancing a collaborative network of trauma-informed, culturally-responsive health resources for clients.
