Southcentral Foundation Rural SASP SAPTA Program - PROJECT ABSTRACT Project Title: Southcentral Foundation Rural SASP SAPTA Program Applicant Name: Southcentral Foundation Address: 4501 Diplomacy Drive, Anchorage, AK 99508 Website: https://www.southcentralfoundation.com/ Project Director: Angela Young Grant Funds Requested: $400,000 Overview: Southcentral Foundation (SCF) is an Alaska Native 501(c) (3) nonprofit health care organization established under the Tribal authority of Cook Inlet Region, Inc. in 1982. SCF's vision is "A Native Community that enjoys physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness." To reach this vision, SCF is committed to developing a scalable, sustainable, community-driven approach to help our rural Alaskan communities prevent, treat, and provide aftercare for substance abuse. Project Need: According to the State of Alaska, although Alaska Native and American Indian (AN/AI) people make up only 15.6% of Alaska’s total population, in 2019/2020, they accounted for 35.2% of persons treated for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse. Additionally, AN/AI youth aged 17 or under treated for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse accounted for 48.5% of the total. Target Population: The target population for the proposed project is Alaska Native adults and youth who are experiencing substance abuse or illicit substance use. The project focuses on rural and remote communities in the SCF service area to take a community driven approach to address substance abuse prevention, treatment, and aftercare. Proposed Project: SCF’s Behavioral Health Rural Team (BHRT)and members of our established Tribal Health Advisory Councils are committed to working together on the common goals to decrease substance use rates, increase treatment, and improve aftercare in our rural communities, for both adults and with a special focus on youth. These rural communities are committed to engaging their community members and local stakeholders, such as schools, to work together to reduce the prevalence of substance abuse and decrease the overall use of addicting and illicit substances among the adults and youth in their communities, by working with BHRT to increase prevention activities, awareness messaging, and eliminate the stigma of seeking behavioral health treatment for substance abuse. Throughout the five-year project period, SCF will accomplish the following goals: 1. Care coordination in our rural communities will be improved. 2. Behavioral health care services using culturally appropriate evidence-based and practice-based models to address these substance abuse issues will be enhanced and in practice in our rural communities. 3. In addition to any proposed activities for the adult population, SCF will develop, expand on, and implement activities for youth at risk for substance abuse behavior in rural communities by implementing early intervention strategies for AI/AN youth.
