In 2015 the suicide rate of AI/AN adolescents (ages 10-17), was 1.8 times the national suicide rate for adolescents (CDC, 2015). From 2010 to 2016 the California suicide rate for AI/AN youth was 10.27% compared with the overall youth California suicide rate of 3.61 (CDC). California Kids Count data shows there were 472 completed suicides in 2015 for youth ages 15 to 24; 51 of the suicides (10.80%) were AI/AN youth. According to the 2017 California Health Interview Survey, 11% of the Native American population in Kern County have reported suicidal ideations. BAIHP submits this proposal to the SPIP grant program to further the goal of reducing the incidence of suicide in the American Indian and Alaska Native community of Bakersfield, Kern County, California.
