Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention - The Native American Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest (NARA NW or “NARA”), an Urban Indian Organization, Federally Qualified Health System, as well as integrated primary and behavioral healthcare organization, located in Portland, Oregon, will continue to reduce the alarming prevalence of suicide within the American Indian/Alaskan Native communities. This goal will be met by leading and cultivating lasting change through the provision of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention services integrated into NARA’s primary healthcare and other complimentary services. The proposed project will allow continued implementation of the Youth Prevention Program, Life is Sacred Program (Zero Suicide) and Child and Family Services. Under this program, NARA will target AI/AN youth, adults and all communities affected by suicide in collaboration with the nine tribes of Oregon and Oregon Health Authority.
1. Key interventions and strategies for the program are: Improve care coordination through NARA NW's Youth Prevention Program, Life is Sacred Program, and Child and Family Services.
2. Provide suicide prevention and intervention services within local school districts, Indian education programs, and corrections/detention centers.
3. Ensure access to telehealth services.
4. Strengthen staff and community response trainings.
5. Implement Generation Indigenous Initiative youth activities that can be accessed virtually or in person as long as it applies to COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines.
6. Reduce barriers to behavioral health services and improve the referral process.
7. Address the concepts, attitudes, and norms towards suicide using tribal-based practices and a trauma-informed approach.
8. Provide culturally-specific and traditional treatment using indigenous medicines, host online and in-person events, and implement a tribal youth council to address the community's needs and feedback.
9. Establish an advisory board to promote community involvement and provide culturally driven recommendations to improve program activities.
10. Identify key partnerships to strengthen integrated health services, cross-system referrals, and support retention and engagement.
NARA NW has established rapport with tribal communities in a culturally responsive manner to develop and implement the proposed activities to ensure culturally appropriate best practices are at the center of this work. Many indigenous communities struggle to confront suicide for various and complex reasons. However, NARA NW has long-standing collaborative relationships with state agencies, local organizations, and tribal communities in the behavioral health and wellness systems. As a result, NARA NW is equipped to increase the capacity to spearhead this program, to plan, improve, and sustain a multi-faceted program to serve the AI/AN community and others in their care.
