The Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights (BCRHHR) at Boston Medical Center provides comprehensive health, mental health, legal, social work, and support services to more than 450 refugees each year, three-fourths of whom are from Africa. African refugee women are an especially challenging Limited English Proficiency (LEP) population facing enormous barriers to care. Most African refugee women have survived traumatic experiences of war, political oppression, displacement, and extreme poverty. They lack of knowledge about Western medicine, hold traditional views of women?s health and bodies, and frequently have a history of sexual torture and trauma, which they consider a source of shame. The Ujambo (Good Health) Initiative is designed to help African refugee women overcome these barriers to care and connect them with criticalliy needed needed mental health services and cancer screening (mammograms and Pap smears).
