OIC-SFL was awarded the SRAE Grant in 2021. This is the year 3 NCC. The project serves 500 youth annually, ages 13-19, attending schools and living in 11 zip codes with the highest TBRs in Broward County. These schools serve populations vulnerable for teen pregnancy, such as youth who are: African American and Hispanic; in or aging out of foster care; victims of trafficking; runaway and homeless; and/or justice involved. The combined teen birth rate for the target community is 24.0, more than twice as high as for the remainder of Broward County (10.7). In addition, the target community is characterized by disproportionately high rates of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, for both teen chlamydia and teen gonorrhea rates. The teen chlamydia rate for the target county was more than 1.75 times that of Broward County and Florida, while the teen gonorrhea rate the target county was more than twice that of Broward County and Florida. A fifth (20.1%) of those residing in the target county are living below the poverty line. The OIC SRAE program provides evidence-based SRAE curricula Love Notes 3.0 EBP SRA Adaptation to high school age youth and Relationship Smarts Plus 4.0 SRA to middle school age youth. Both curricula include positive youth development services in the areas of success sequencing, healthy relationship education, career preparation, and healthy life skills. The project promotes social and emotional wellbeing, screen youth for support service needs, and making referrals for healthcare and other community services as indicated by the assessments. OIC also delivers a minimum of 2 educational workshops each year to educate parents/caregivers on risky behaviors and protective factors and help them develop skills to improve parent/child communication around sexual decision-making.
