The Baylor Scott and White Spinal Cord Injury Model System (BSW-SCIMS) leverages the clinical and research capacity of the leading regional rehabilitation hospital to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary continuum of care for people with SCI that has a strong history of conducting innovative research. The goal is to improve the health and function of individuals with SCI through evidence-based clinical care and innovative research. The objectives are to: (1) provide comprehensive care and rehabilitation to individuals with SCI; (2) assess the long-term outcomes of individuals with SCI (3) test the efficacy of brief prolonged exposure therapy (Brief PE) to prevent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD - site-specific project); (4) examine community usage of robotic exoskeletons among SCIMS participants and impact on patient reported outcomes (module project); and (5) disseminate findings to stakeholders. Anticipated outcomes include: (1) provision of a comprehensive continuum of care for individuals with SCI; (2) annual enrollment of =30 participants into the national database; (3) efficacy data supporting use of Brief PE following SCI to prevent PTSD that is scalable across the United States; (4) evidence regarding longitudinal robotic exoskeleton use during initial years of recovery after SCI to inform future intervention implementation; and (5) resources for individuals with SCI and stakeholders. Expected products include a usable and replicable PTSD manualized intervention for individuals with SCI, comprehensive evidence of exoskeleton use in people with SCI living in the community, scientific papers and presentations of study results, stakeholder and trainee workshops, educational resources on SCI for individuals and stakeholders, and plain language factsheets disseminated locally and through the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center.
