The Native Village of Kongiganak has a strong and vibrant tribal government. We have been adjudicating tribal court cases since our community began. We have relied on our Tribal Council to hear cases and make judgements. But our population is growing and the role of our Tribal Council has expanded to include a wide variety of governmental services. For the past four years, our Tribal Council has not been able to hear cases. Clearly we need a different form of tribal court. We want to develop a functional tribal court that is separate from our Tribal Council. We have worked diligently on the development of a tribal court since 1997, but without a staff person dedicated to planning our tribal court we have not been able to make significant progress.
