Ancestral Food Sovereignty and Four-Season Greenhouse Project - PROJECT SUMMARY Applicant: National Fund for Excellence in American Indian Education Address / Contact: 1849 C St NW # MS3512, Washington, DC 20240, 571-380-3620, info@nfeaie.org, nfeaie.org Project Title: Ancestral Food Sovereignty and Four-Season Greenhouse Project Request Amount: $744,071 (Federal Budget under PA1, Seventh-Generation Greenhouses); $186,018 (Cost Share) Proposed Project Period of Performance: 09/30/2026-09/29/2029 The National Fund for Excellence in American Indian Education, in partnership with FoodCorps, San Felipe Pueblo Elementary School, and Kha’p’o Community School, all of which have issued letters for this project, will procure, install, and operate two climate-resilient, non-construction movable greenhouse under Project Area 1 (Seventh-Generation Greenhouses). This project serves approximately 175 students in grades K-8 and 75 to 100 family households across the Pueblo of San Felipe community in Sandoval County, New Mexico, and extends in Year 3 to a second National Fund-administered site at Kha'p'o Community School in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. Greenhouse and agricultural-education funding at Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools has struggled to translate into implementation. Supportive partners such as NAAF, FoodCorps, Trust for Public Land, and BIE nutritional advisors sometimes work in parallel rather than through a coordinated delivery model. Directly administered and fiscally managed by the National Fund to overcome systemic implementation barriers, this proposed coordinated delivery model unites school leadership, local agricultural knowledge keepers, embedded FoodCorps field instruction, and nutritional advisement. This project has three core objectives that span 36-month period: (1) Procure and install a modular non-construction greenhouse infrastructure to enable year-round, weatherproof cultivation by month 12 of Year 1; (2) Deliver hands-on agrarian education, operationalize a youth social enterprise, and provide direct household food security and economic relief to families in the San Felipe Elementary School community; and (3) Procure and install a modular non-construction greenhouse infrastructure to enable year-round, weatherproof cultivation at a second project site at Kha'p'o Community School. The National Fund retains full fiscal and legal accountability for all project activities. San Felipe Pueblo Elementary School hosts a full-time FoodCorps service member who will provide daily on-site growing instruction, student labs, community food-preparation events, and produce stand operations. Commander Casey Cavanaugh, the BIE Nutritionist from the U.S. Public Health Service commits to provide technical nutrition and food sovereignty support to San Felipe Pueblo Elementary School, National Fund and FoodCorps Staff. Cultural and instructional direction comes from San Felipe and Santa Clara Pueblo farmers, knowledge keepers, and elders, and from school leadership at both sites. The National Fund retains full fiscal and legal accountability for all project activities. This project directly advances ACF's stated priorities of Program Integrity and Fiscal Stewardship, Partnership and Local Leadership, and Family Stability and Child Well-Being.
