The purpose of `Honoring Our Languages-Abiba I Lengguahita-Mwareiti Mwaliyasch¿ is to strengthen the cultural identity of the indigenous Chamorro and Carolinian people of the Northern Marianas as they reinforce the honor of their languages by speaking them intergenerationally in the home. This project will have the following outcomes: 1. Status of language usage in homes, including extent, attitudes and influencing factors, will be identified; 2 Community will be educated on status of language usage in homes; 3. Economic, educational, environmental and social benefits of language usage in homes will be conveyed to community; 4. Community will develop a long-range plan to promote language usage in homes This project will allow Chamorro and Carolinian families to identify the value of speaking their own language and ensuring its continued vitality. In identifying the value of their language, in the context of today's modern society, Chamorros and Carolinians will be proud to speak it and honor its usage. The immediate beneficiaries of this project will be the families who regain a sense of value in their cultural heritage. Through the proposed long-range plan, this could also translate to an enhanced cultural tourism economy, which would benefit the entire Northern Mariana Islands.
