The Healthy Body, Healthy Mind ( Cuerpo Sano, Mente Sana) Program addresses under-recognition of Alzheimer¿s disease and related dementias (ADRD) in minority communities and seeks to remedy their lack of access to accurate information and services through a comprehensive outreach & education program targeting E. and SE Los Angeles, W. Central and South L.A. The goal of the caregiver education and outreach project is to ensure that families of African American and Latino seniors living with ADRD are identified, educated about the disease, and provided with culturally & linguistically appropriate information and support services through the Association and community partners. Objectives: (1) conduct 80 outreach activities; (2) coordinate and implement 40 community education events, including sessions promoting healthy lifestyles (Healthy Body, Healthy Mind/Cuerpo Sano, Mente Sana); (3) coordinate and implement 20 caregiver education sessions (English & Spanish); (4) disseminate 5,000 pieces of literature on risk reduction for brain disease, Alzheimer¿s disease and/or caregiving; and (5) hold two media events, one for a Spanish language audience. Outcomes: The Alzheimer¿s Association hopes to achieve: 1) increased awareness of risk factors for Alzheimer¿s disease and related disorders in the African American and Latino communities targeted by this project; 2) increased knowledge of Alzheimer¿s disease and caregiving among family caregivers who attend educational programs; and 3) increased access by Latinos and African American caregivers to appropriate health and social services to help afflicted families obtain support and medical care. Products: Lessons learned will be summarized in a report to be shared with Alzheimer¿s Association chapters through regional meetings, and with other aging services providers as requested.
