Abstract
In this three-year project, an interdisciplinary team comprised of members from Florida Atlantic University's College of Education, College of Engineering, Academy for Community Inclusion, in partnership with technology collaborator ImaginX, and key stakeholders, seek to revolutionize job training for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) through Virtual Reality (VR) technology. The primary goal of this study is to develop and assess the effectiveness and social acceptance of an innovative job training delivery model using VR technology with job coach functionalities, implemented through a specialized application on head-mounted VR goggles in a small-group setting. The objectives include: 1) empower individuals with IDD through tailored technology access and customized job training, enhancing their employability; 2) improve vocational training efficiency by providing professionals with advanced tools that streamline and enhance job readiness for individuals with IDD; and 3) cultivate a diverse and inclusive workspace culture among employers, nurturing a creative and collaborative atmosphere. Anticipated outcomes include: 1) enhanced job readiness and potential among individuals with IDD, 2) improved vocational training efficiencies, and 3) creation of stronger community support for individuals with IDD. This initiative aims to transform the perception and involvement of individuals with IDD in their communities from mere participants to valuable contributors, thereby fostering a more inclusive and enriched society for all. The product, a VR application for job training, contributes to an enriched life for individuals with IDD and their communities by transitioning them from participants to contributors. Additionally, the project will produce technology transfer plan, operational guidelines, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
