Elder Safety in Our Hands: A Tribal-Led Approach to Elder Abuse Prevention and Response in Kodiak - Kodiak Area Native Association (KANA) proposes a two-year project to achieve our goal, to expand and improve protective services to Elders who experience abuse, neglect, and exploitation and to develop Kodiak-specific resources which empower service providers and community members to prevent, intervene on, and respond to these issues in a sustainable and culturally appropriate manner. Target population: Kodiak residing elders | Partnership: IA² Objectives: 1) to establish a Kodiak-based elder abuse case review multidisciplinary team (MDT); 2) host IA²-led prevention training for service providers and community members; 3) develop local capacity to sustain elder abuse prevention and response activities beyond the grant period; and 4) share successes, lessons learned, and resources with other organizations in Alaska. Outcomes: A) improved coordination among agencies serving Elders who experience or may be experiencing abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation; B) increased numbers of trained providers and community members receive Kodiak-specific resources on elder abuse identification, intervention and response; C) providers are more knowledgeable and skilled in identifying, intervening, and responding to elder abuse, neglect and/or exploitation; D) community awareness and willingness to report suspected cases has increased; E) Elder Services staff are recognized subject matter experts able to educate and train others; F) expanded training capacity in Kodiak; G) elder abuse prevention knowledge is integrated into KANA’s required staff trainings; H) more Kodiak-specific resources are available; and I) successes and resources are actively shared with other organizations/Alaska-based Title VI recipients. Products: MDT MOU, Policy & Procedure handbook, MDT Strategic Plan, adapted training materials, safety plans, IA² train-the-trainer module, presentations, prevention materials, Toolkits, standardized KANA training modules, and success/lessons learned presentations.
