San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside, Inc. Community Economic Development Planning Grant - San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside, Inc. (SAGE) will use $150,000 in CED Planning funds to build the administrative capacity of the community to develop a fundable CED project in San Antionio, Texas. The planning project will serve the Eastside of San Antonio, a minority-majority area suffering from high levels of poverty and unemployment. This area has experienced historical disenfranchisement due to redlining, racial segregation, and government policies that led to disinvestment in the area. CED Planning funds will be used to develop a comprehensive, community-informed business plan to open a public market complex in San Antionio’s Eastside neighborhood. Planning activities include developing a community coalition of support for the project, identifying additional sources of funding, and conducting analyses to determine business needs and opportunities. Specifically, the CED Planning award will fund staff salaries and purchase contracted services to complete planning activities that require specialized skills, including the completion of an economic impact and market analysis report and architectural renderings. The significance of this project is underscored by the fact that currently residents in San Antonio’s Eastside neighborhood lack access to grocery stores, dining options, and entertainment spaces. This project will create an attractive new community space where residents can shop for groceries, dine at local restaurants, shop at local businesses, attend community events, and more. Upon completing the planning activities, SAGE will be well-positioned to submit a CED job creation project application, paving the way for the establishment of the public market complex.
