The Spaulding-Harvard Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (SH-TBIMS) is proposed in response to the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) call for Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) Proposals. SH-TBIMS is a unique collaboration of the vast clinical and research resources of Harvard Medical School and Partners Healthcare System (Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital). In accordance with NIDILRR’s Long Range Plan, the overall goal of SH-TBIMS is to provide a multidisciplinary, comprehensive system of care for those with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) that fosters innovative TBI rehabilitation research. Utilizing our extensive research infrastructure, and clinical and research expertise, SH-TBIMS will fulfill multiple objectives: 1) provide model care, 2) facilitate comprehensive longitudinal assessment of TBI outcomes by contributing to the TBIMS National Database, 3) execute a high quality site-specific project, 4) propose and participate in a collaborative module project, 5) disseminate research findings, and 6) involve persons with TBI and their families in all stages of research. Anticipated outcomes include: 1) exceeding enrollment and follow-up goals of the TBIMS National Database, 2) creating a unique recovery metric that bridges acute and postacute care, and 3) enhancing dissemination and consumer engagement via a variety of activities. Final products will include 1) a recovery measure accessible to acute and postacute clinicians and patient families for tracking TBI recovery among those with the most severe injuries., and 2) user-friendly dissemination products for a variety of target populations developed through our strong partnership with the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center and the TBI survivor and family community.
