The Lurie Institute for Disability Policy at Brandeis University proposes Parents Empowering Parents: National Research Center for Parents with Disabilities (PEP Center), directed by a National Advisory Board of racially and ethnically diverse parents with disabilities living with a range of disabilities. The PEP Center represents a partnership with the Universities of Michigan, Massachusetts, & Cincinnati, Arizona State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Gallaudet University. Knowledge translation activities employing state-of-the-art technologies will be supported by national partners, including the AUCD, ARC, National Disability Rights Network, American Council of the Blind, Mental Health America, Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, the Child Welfare League of America, and others. The project goal is to conduct research and provide training and technical assistance to improve the lives of parents with disabilities and their families, particularly racial and ethnic minority parents. The objectives are: 1.) provide accurate population- based estimates pertaining to the prevalence and life circumstances of parents with disabilities and their families; 2.) analyze the impact of state laws pertaining to the rights of parents with disabilities; 3.) adapt an intervention for parents with psychiatric disabilities, particularly racial and ethnic minority parents; 4.) develop and test navigational literacy peer support interventions for parents with intellectual disabilities and Deaf parents; and 5.) develop and test a practice change intervention for child welfare professionals. Outcomes include: targeted recommendations for evidence-informed policies and programs, improved family functioning and supports, and improved child welfare outcomes for parents with disabilities and their families.
