Kansas Serves Native American Families (KSNAF) seeks to improve the wellbeing, safety, and permanency of Native American children affected by parent and community substance abuse through implementing and assessing a culturally integrated, evidence-based parenting skills training, Strengthening Families Program (SFP). The goals of KSNAF are to:1)Promote the well-being Native American families with children in or at risk of out-of-home placement2)Strengthen cultural sensitivity, trauma-informed capacity, and collaboration across agencies who provide services to Native American families affected by substance abuse and involved or at risk of involvement with child welfare systems in Kansas3)Develop and share information about implementing and evaluating a parent/family skill-building program with Native American familiesThe primary target population for this project is Native American children, ages 0 to 18 who are in or at risk of out-of-home placement and affected by family/community substance use. KSNAF recruits, trains and supports individuals who are Native American to offer SFP within tribal communities and other sites in Kansas. SFP is designed to positively impact family bonding, communication, and parental supervision.Every year, KSNAF staff and partners offer five SFP groups serving with 5 to 8 families each at different sites across Kansas, including Native American reservations. The project proposes to serve 80-100 families over the life of the project. A comprehensive evaluation of KSNAF includes a focus on the process and outcomes of the program including its impact on children, parents, and systems that serve Native American families.KSNAF is a partnership between the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska, Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas, Haskell Indian Nations University, Kansas Department for Children and Famili es, Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, KVC and Ahearn Greene Associates.
