The field of rehabilitation medicine needs more high quality researchers to help improve quality of care by investigating the cause of diseases and injuries, how to prevent them and how to treat them by developing more targeted rehabilitative therapies based on evidence discovered through the research. This Advanced Rehabilitation Research Training (ARRT) Project in Rehabilitation Neuroscience and Engineering application, led by Co-directors Drs. Guang Yue and Gail Forrest proposes to train doctoral-level researchers committed to advancing the field of rehabilitation that will improve overall health and function of individuals with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal (NM-MSK) diseases and injuries. The three domains of rehabilitation research emphasized in the Rutgers University New Jersey Medical School/Kessler Foundation Research Center/Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation (Rutgers/KFRC/KIR) ARRT are: (1) Sensorimotor Neuroscience, (2) Rehabilitation Robotics & Engineering, and (3) Neuroimaging. All domains are focused towards Clinical Rehabilitation outcomes and are reflected in the three major Training Cores within the ARRT. The Program is designed to be multidisciplinary, and solicits and enrolls Postdoctoral Fellows from rehabilitation-related fields. These Fellows will receive research training that will facilitate their pursuit of a career in rehabilitation research. Rutgers, represented by the academic Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School will serve primarily as the educational and administrative center of the ARRT. KFRC will play the role as the research training center and its research scientists (PIs) will serve as the primary and secondary Mentors. The KIR, a renowned rehabilitation hospital in the country, located on the same campus with KFRC will function as the clinical training center with its physicians serving as secondary or clinical Mentors of the Fellows. In addition to the three highly integrated institutions (Rutgers, KFRC and KIR), investigators in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and other affiliated institutions will play a significant role in mentoring the ARRT Fellows. Investigators in all these institutions have a long history of and ongoing funded collaborations that should help tremendously foster the training program. The ARRT program receives exceptionally strong support from leadership of all 3 institutions. The proposed ARRT center on NM-MSK rehabilitation addresses the needs of multiple disability populations, including Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), acquired and traumatic brain injury (ABI and TBI), stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS) and orthopedic conditions who will benefit from the capacity building of rehabilitation researchers.
