The purpose of this project is to prepare a cadre of four advanced level researchers in the area of psychiatric vocational rehabilitation and employment of persons with psychiatric disabilities. We propose to carry out advanced research training for professionals committed to engaging in high quality, innovative employment research. The proposed training program will be carried out in two consecutive cycles of a 2-year, full-time postdoctoral fellowship with two fellows in residence at a time. Recruitment efforts will target candidates with the lived experience of mental illness. The proposed training program encompasses a unique blend of didactic, research and collegial activities based on current state-of-the art knowledge in psychiatric vocational rehabilitation and employment research. More specifically, the goals of the proposed ARRTP are: Goal One: To recruit four doctoral level graduates in mental health, rehabilitation or occupational therapy who are committed to a research career in psychiatric vocational rehabilitation. Goal Two: To provide fellows with intensive state-of-the-art didactic experience and opportunities for collegial collaboration relevant to psychiatric vocational rehabilitation research. Goal Three: To provide fellows with extensive research practicum in consisting of: mentored participation in an ongoing research project; design and implementation of an independent research study; preparation of grant submissions, publications and conference presentations relevant to each fellow’s area of interest. The proposed ARRTP will contribute to development of the next generation of highly qualified researchers who will expand current practices in the field to new levels and further improve the lives of persons with psychiatric disabilities.
