The objective of the Collaborative on Health Reform and Independent Living Fellowship (CHRIL-F) is to provide a highly personalized 18-month research training experience to three scholars with disabilities who hold doctorates or similar advanced degrees and are personally committed to understanding and improving health policies and services for all Americans with disabilities. Ultimately, we expect these participants to take faculty positions at major universities or leadership roles in federal research agencies or nonprofit foundations. This postdoctoral program explicitly recognizes and accommodates the financial and vocational needs of scholars with disabilities. Each fellow will be hired as a research associate at the Washington State University (WSU) Department of Health Policy and Administration (HPA) with a competitive salary (about $51k annually, plus full health insurance coverage and retirement benefits). All employees are eligible for a tuition waiver (up to six credits per semester). Fellows with significant disability support needs will also be offered up to 40 hours of workplace personal assistance per week, plus supplemental funds for housing assistance, moving expenses, adaptive technologies and conference travel. The CHRIL-F will complement and extend the work of the Collaborative on Health Reform and Independent Living (CHRIL), a multisite Disability and Rehabilitation Research Project funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research. During the last part of their training period, fellows may choose to spend 3-6 months at one or more CHRIL affiliate sites, including: Washington, DC (American Association on Health and Disability); Lawrence, Kansas (Institute for Health and Disability Policy Studies); or Houston, Texas (Independent Living Research Utilization) to work on CHRIL research or knowledge translation (KT) projects.
