Brief overview of the residency program The DWCHA (dba Authority Health/AH) internal medicine residency program operates under the direction of the Detroit Wayne County GME Consortium, which has been granted institutional accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The program mission is to improve the health of the medically underserved of Detroit and Wayne County through training internal medicine residents in local FQHCs and other primary care practices. Residents are engaged with faculty supervisors in providing state of the art patient care, incorporating both community and population health, with an emphasis on awareness and reduction of health disparities. During residency, all trainees complete a certificate program in Population Health. The primary training goal is the production of board-certified internists who practice patient-centered, evidence-based primary care, to help meet the growing demand for primary care providers in Detroit, Wayne County, and Michigan. Primary training sites are Western Wayne Health Center (FQHC), selected primary care practices, and Sinai-Grace Hospital, located in Detroit. All facilities serve any and all residents of Detroit, with a focus on vulnerable populations. Resident education focuses on ambulatory care, with requisite inpatient experience. At the FQHCs, residents experience the patient-centered medical home model, emphasizing prevention, and screening patients for social determinants of health, medical conditions, and mental health conditions. In col
laboration with various community agencies, residents work with patients and families to address medical, behavioral, and social needs. Training sites accept all health insurance plans, provide enrollment services for Medicare and Medicaid, and are working to integrate medical and behavioral health care. Residents collaborate with faculty preceptors in continuous quality improvement and patient safety projects. Resident physicians are selected for their fit with the Authority Health mission, their personal values, commitment to vulnerable populations, and past evidence of a servant leader mentality. The quality and number of applicants to the program has increased over the eight years of operation. Approximately 60% of program graduates are practicing in physician or primary care shortage areas. The program has achieved continuing/full accreditation through the ACGME, with graduates being 90% successful in passing the specialty board examination in internal medicine. 8.
