The purpose of this project is to prepare family physicians to provide quality primary care services for individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). The project’s objectives target the education of medical students, the training of family medicine residents at three residency programs, enhancement of faculty and community resources, and the recruitment of preceptors who provide medical care for persons with LEP. Specific learning objectives are related to understanding cultural competency and linguistically appropriate care, being able to identify health disparities in populations with LEP, identifying how to best work with language interpreters and translation services, as well as ways to improve access to health care and improve health literacy for patients with LEP. The substantial long-term impact of this project is the provision of and increased access to quality primary care services for populations with LEP served by program graduates. As the applicant’s residency graduates have some of the highest national rates of practicing in rural and underserved areas, the project should make substantial contributions to HHS and HRSA clinical priorities. This impact will be increased by dissemination of outcomes and model programs to other educators. The team members assigned to each objective will be responsible for conduct of activities and achievement of outcomes. The project evaluator will monitor and adjust program activities using a Rapid Cycle Quality Improvement (RCQI) process and will be responsible for all required reporting to HRSA. The project is designed to rapidly increase training related to persons with LEP. This is a project of the Department of Family and Community Medicine of the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. The project will use the resources of the institution, partnering community organizations and State agencies, and assistance from consultants in areas of specialized experience and experti se. Clinical activities will be led by family physicians. The funding priority is requested based on a high rate of family medicine residents receiving training in rural areas in AY2021-2022 and the Medically Underserved Community (MUC) funding preference is requested based on a high rate of trainees in underserved areas in AY2020-2021 and AY2021-2022.
