St. Louis STD/HIV Prevention Training Center Established in 1995, the St. Louis STD/HIV Prevention Training Center (PTC) at Washington University offers state-of-the-art medical and laboratory services training and technical assistance (T/TA) for sexually transmitted disease (STD) and HIV prevention and control to healthcare providers, healthcare organizations, and health systems throughout the central Midwestern states of IA, IL, KS, KY, MO, NE, and WI. Through CDC-RFA-PS20-2004, we now seek to expand and enhance our training capacity in through the following activities: Component A – Core Regional Center. The St. Louis STD/HIV Prevention Training Center will extend its reach as the premier provider of T/TA for STD clinical care and prevention throughout the central US, using a mix of didactic, experiential, and skills-building activities. Our program emphasizes collaborative partnerships to conduct regional assessments of gaps in STD service provision and quality; development and implementation of T/TA modalities which address needs at clinician, healthcare organization, and health systems levels; engagement of regional experts and emerging leaders in ongoing, interactive learning communities for STD clinical care provision; and strengthening of T/TA partnerships to extend the reach and scope of activities throughout our catchment area. Subcomponent A1 –Regional HIV Prevention Scale-Up. The St. Louis PTC will implement T/TA activities to assist specialty STD clinics across central Midwestern states to overcome barriers and promote wider provision of HIV preventive services in STD clinical settings. This includes scaling up routine HIV testing of persons seeking STD care; improving accessibility and provision of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP )and non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) for HIV-negative persons and enhancing linkage to care (for HIV-positive persons); and engagement of regional STD specialty clinic providers in ongoing interactive learning communities for HIV service provision. These efforts build on Washington University expertise as a CDC-funded provider of capacity-building assistance (CBA) for HIV prevention, and collaboration with regional HRSA-funded AETC partners. Subcomponent A2 – STD Clinical Prevention Fellowship. The St. Louis PTC will establish a multi-dimensional post-residency fellowship program in STD clinical prevention which will provide high-quality clinical, epidemiological, and programmatic training for STD leaders of the future. Designed as a collaborative effort between two prestigious medical schools (Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Chicago), the STD Clinical Prevention Fellow will receive training in all aspects of STD clinical care, research, and prevention. Rotations and mentorship in St. Louis and Chicago will broaden the fellow’s exposure to STD clinical care settings and will provide a strong foundation for research and career development in STD prevention.
