Program to assess the public health threats at and around Florida's Hazardous Waste Sites and ensure children's health safety when cared for in early care and education facilities. - Over the 3-year project period, the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) proposes to continue assessing the public health threat around Florida's hazardous waste sites using standard Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry health risk assessment methodology. As it has done since 1987, FDOH will:  a. gather existing environmental data,  b. visit hazardous waste sites,  c. consider possible routes of exposure,  d. estimate doses to toxic chemicals,  e. predict the risk of illness,  f. make recommendations to protect public health, and  g. communicate finding to both the public and other agencies. The FDOH further proposes to continue its effort regarding Choose Safe Places for Early Care and Education (CSPECE) facilities. During the past three years, this effort has started a great interest among our partners to protect children from hazardous chemicals when in care. FDOH will focus efforts proposed in this application to perform final implementation of the initiative, as well as promote its sustainability with workshops and training. FDOH proposes to do so with a staff of five having over 39 years of combined programmatic experience involving toxicology, risk assessment and health education. Florida DOH has good working relationships with the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Department of Children and Families, county health departments, and many community members. FDOH is further aiming to develop intervention initiatives to reduce risk factors associated with environmental exposure as well as developing a fast response system that partners and communities can use for prevention and risk communication strategies. Therefore, building and strengthening partnerships are now more valuable than ever and are often necessary. The skillset to communicate potential risks to human and environmental health is vital to facilitate community participation and decision-making and can be very challenging when dealing with great political pressure and science that is rapidly evolving.
