Sullivan Allies Leading Together (SALT) is a multisector, grassroots, community based coalition seeking to reduce substance use and abuse among young people in the Liberty, Fallsburg, and Monticello School Central Districts in Sullivan County, New York through prevention efforts which include community outreach, prosocial activities, and media campaigns. Sullivan County, New York currently has the highest overdose rate per capita in New York State and consistently ranks as the 2nd sickest, 2nd poorest county, faring worse than only the Bronx. The goal is to reduce marijuana and alcohol use among young people by 5-10%, depending on measures, which has been shown to have increased and to be a key risk factor for young people in these communities. A secondary goal is to address adult perception of use in order to influence young people’s perception as well. Progress on all will be assessed through community forums and surveys. The catchment area reaches at least 17,000 families. SALT already consists of more than 35 members from all 12 sectors required by the Drug Free Communities program, providing the foundation for the continued growth, sustenance, and impact of this coalition.
