The Modoc Youth and Family Services (MYFS) Native Connections program will serve at-risk youth and young adults (ages 6 to 24 years) in Ottawa County in Northeastern Oklahoma by building protective factors that have been shown to reduce suicide and other risky behaviors. Serving a minimum of 150 youth annually, this program seeks to utilize a public health approach to support youth as they transition into adulthood by building resiliency, reducing the impact of substance abuse, mental illness, and trauma within our AI/AN community. Our public health approach will depend on collaboration between MYFS and the community partners who come into contact with the identified population. The Native Connections program will measure the community’s readiness to provide suicide prevention strategies and deliver evidence based mental health awareness trainings and offer suicide prevention awareness tools to overcome any deficits, serving a minimum of 75 service professionals per year. In addition, the Native Connections program improve treatment and prevention by improving participation rates in native-based culturally relevant services, such as Trauma Focused-Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy and White Bison’s Curriculum “What is The Purpose of Life?”
