TTUHSC’s six schools (Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Professions, Population and Public Health, and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences) are committed to regionalized, multi-campus educational experiences, and to the related biomedical research, graduate studies, patient care and community service required of a health sciences center. Simulation in healthcare education is essential in the training of current and future healthcare professionals. Simulation-based learning activities allows learners to gain real-world experience in a safe and controlled environment, helping to prepare them for the complex challenges they will face in their careers. The TTUHSC Simulation Program exists across multiple interprofessional simulation centers and training sites. The TTUHSC Simulation Center in Dallas will be in the TTUHSC building located in the Dallas Medical District. This center will support intra- and interprofessional simulation-based learning and assessment experiences for students enrolled in TTUHSC’s School of Nursing (Accelerated and the Advanced Nurse Practitioner Programs) and School of Pharmacy. As one of the sites for the Nursing Accelerated Program, the Dallas campus supports 45 of the 180 students admitted to this program annually. Most of the Nursing Accelerated Program students currently live in the Dallas/Metroplex area. This program is specifically tailored to provide Veterans and individuals with a previous college bachelor’s degree the ability to obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing within a 12-month period. The expansion of the TTUHSC Simulation Program to the Dallas Metroplex will allow current and projected certification and credentialing courses to be provided through this center. The Dallas Simulation Center will decrease travel expenses for TTUHSC students and provide collaborative workforce development opportunities for community partners. As a community-based project, the TTUHSC Simulation Program is committed to providing workforce development resources to community partners in the Dallas area. TTUHSC is situated in an optimal location for access by many neighboring schools within the Dallas Independent School District (DISD). In partnership with the Dallas Regional Chamber, Southern Dallas County Economic Development, and Dallas ISD, programs may be developed and offered to expose students of all ages to healthcare education opportunities. Additionally, TTUHSC can pursue partnership with DISD’s P-Tech and Early College Programs to develop collaborative programs and educate students on pathways to continue their education in various healthcare-related fields. Furthermore, TTUHSC desires to grow collaboration with the Girl Scouts to offer their “Double T and Me” and “The Best I Can Be” programs to Dallas-area Girl Scout Troops. This project provides a one-day excursion into nursing in which the scouts participate in activities related to basic life support, wellness, and personal safety training. Finally, the simulation program creates an invaluable training opportunity for individuals to experience disaster drills and a multitude of other trainings in a safe and effective learning environment. The TTUHSC Dallas Simulation Center aims to be recognized as a meaningful and valuable partner to the local community as we develop and offer programs advancing the exposure to healthcare and opportunities for pursuing healthcare education for the surrounding community.
