The Modoc Nation will build a program focused on Domestic Violence prevention (DVP) in
partnership with the Community Crisis Center of Northeast Oklahoma and the Healing House.
There is a lack of tailored services available for survivors of domestic violence and their families
and Oklahoma’s high rate of female murder victims makes this cause especially vital within
Ottawa County’s American Indian and Alaska Natives (AIAN) community. Due to the unique
needs of many survivors, Modoc Nation will utilize a Community Coordinated Response/ Sexual
Assault Response team to organize culturally appropriate services for this population. The team
will be comprised of regional partners trained in violence prevention and crisis response and will
utilize a documented referral process for incoming and existing clients. Strategic cross-sector
partnerships will be essential to the success of the program. Staff will work closely with law
enforcement, courts, school, religious communities, healthcare providers, and local nonprofits to
assess policies, ensure accessibility of services, and verify care is nonduplicative and culturally
sensitive. The program will support both direct service and community outreach. For direct
service provision, staff will provide trauma-informed case management, counseling services,
court advocacy, and emergency housing support, while outreach staff will conduct workshops,
trainings, recommend prevention curricula, and conduct media campaigns for community
education. A key member of the DVP program will be the Advocacy Service Project Director,
who will lead efforts to coordinate care and collect data to support a targeted response to
violence in the community, working closely with the Community Crisis Center. By providing
both direct service and prevention measures, we hope to see an increase in community awareness
and available services for survivors and their families. The proposed multi-year program will be
heavily informed by strategic partnerships and engagement with community members which will
be imperative to its success and sustainability.
