America Walks is a national organization that focuses on empowering communities and public health practitioners to create safe, accessible and enjoyable places to walk for all people regardless of age, race, ability or income. Over 20 years we have developed a network of 35,000 community partners and a reputation as experts in finding ways these partners can improve walkability in their neighborhoods. We are requesting grant funds to strengthen the capacity of local public health systems to promote walking and improve walkability. Our specific goals for this project are to increase the ability of communications and information technology to engage the public in creating a culture of health and to train and inform public health practitioners and community stakeholders in proven practices for increasing physical activity levels and reducing chronic diseases; improve local public health capacity to establish and maintain cross-sector partnerships that can create a shared vision and targeted priorities for improving health outcomes; and improve the capacity of local practitioners and community stakeholders to customize, prioritize and implement proven public health programs, policies, and environmental changes. We will provide a yearly webinar series of at least 10 new episodes on topics identified through regular feedback gathered from webinar evaluations, environmental scans of emerging issues, and identified public health concerns. Additionally, we will add a targeted training series each year that will focus on developing skills and knowledge for local community public health practitioners and walking champions. These trainings will address topics such as using data and technology for setting priorities; using communications to promote walking and increase the number of safe, accessible places to walk for everyone, regardless of age, race or ability; and turning the community guide recommendations into community action. Our Walking College Fellowship program provides intensive skills development for newly trained public health professionals interested in developing a walkable built environment. We propose increasing the yearly Walking College Fellowship class from 25 per year to 30 fellows during the first year of this award. Each year would add up to five more fellows, with a goal of doubling the class by the end of five years. We will continue to work with the Every Body Walk! Collaborative (EBWC) to convene the National Walking Summit. EBWC represents about 40 active partners from a wide range of sectors, including fitness, land use, transportation, public health, parks, trails and community development. Additionally, they have over 100 members that engage in communications efforts, support content on the website, and continue to amplify the conversation around walking. The National Walking Summit provides a platform for communications and dissemination of research, technology and program guidelines. Latest studies, guidance documents, and resources for action will be the focus of numerous sessions and workshops. We propose to include resources for the 2019 and 2021 Summit in this proposal. We will also increase the number of grants we fund for Community Change, a grant program that awards small grants of $1,500 to catalyze local work that promotes walking and creates safe, walkable neighborhoods.
