Key features of the community: The Greensburg Prevention Group covers the city of Greensburg, a geographic location that resides in Decatur County in the Southeastern portion of Indiana. It is considered the county seat, measuring just over nine square miles. The town sits along the Interstate 74 corridor, which connects Indianapolis to Cincinnati, and is about halfway between these two metropolises, or about a 60-minute drive from each. Greensburg has a population of 11,916, with a population density that is 628% higher than the rest of Indiana. The median age is 37 with nearly 30% of the population below the age of 18. There is an almost even split between males (48.9%) and females (51.1%). Culturally and racially, the population in Greensburg is mostly white/non-Hispanic (93.2%), with other populations including Asian (3%), Hispanic or Latino (2.2%), and African American (1%). There are approximately 4,900 households in Greensburg with just over 2,900 of them living in the city. Socioeconomically, their residents have a median household income of $53,436, with almost 13% of residents living in poverty. In fact, more than 50% of Greensburg children receive free or reduced school lunches. Further, 91.4% of adults have a high school diploma, but only 19.5% of them go on to obtain a secondary degree. This rate is almost 6.5% less than for the state of Indiana. Historical perspectives that have had an impact on youth substance use: Generations of families tend to stay in the Greensburg area. While there isn?t much night life or entertainment in the local area, efforts are underway. Free outdoor summer movies take place monthly on the courthouse lawn, a weekly Farmer?s Market sparks regular traffic to the downtown area, and a 3.1 mile newly paved biking/walking trail has been developed. Despite these efforts, a lack of youth recreation and entertainment can lead to a sense of low community attachment and youth becoming bored, which can then lead to impulsiveness and sensation seeking, all known as risk factors that can lead to youth substance use.The companies that offer the most jobs in Greensburg are in manufacturing. These jobs are mostly filled by temp agencies and do not provide benefits, which can perpetuate the cycle of poverty. Poverty often correlates with substance use, particularly when the risk factors associated with poverty begin at an early age. This is particularly true for alcohol and marijuana. Further, both income and education have been inversely correlated to smoking in Indiana. Another environmental factor includes the fact that Greensburg is home to one of the state?s most successful E-cigarette brick-and-mortar and online retailers, Hoosier E-Cig. This company opened in 2012 and has an annual revenue estimated at nearly $1 million.
