The Healthy Lamoille Valley Coalition is applying for five years of Drug Free Community Support to reduce and prevent youth alcohol and marijuana misuse/abuse in teh Lamoille Valley towns of Belvidere, Cambridge, Craftsbury, Eden, Elmore, Greensboro, Hardwick, Hyde Park, Jeffersonville, Johnson, Morrisville, Stannard, Stowe, Waterville, Wolcott, Woodbury, VT. Within the Lamoille Valley region, 22.5% of the population is 18 years of age or less; 11.1% are between 10 and 18, the age of greatest vulnerability for substance misuse, Currently there are approximately 1,000 children in the Valley under age 18 who live in food insecure Households (Hunger Free Vermont); and the 2017 Point-In-Time Homelessness couont revealed that 64 individuals an 15 families with children were chronically homeless.
It is our goal to work collaboratively as a Coalition to reduce youth substance misuse and build the Coalition's infrastructure and sustainability. To this end we will provide the following services: 1) Expand our Coalition and increase youth involvement opportunities. 2. Promote, support and modify policies/practices that reduce/restrict underage alcohol and marijuana access, building on identified community readiness. 3. Provide education and awareness campaigns around alcohol and marijuana for local youth and their families to decrease availability and increase the perception of harm related to youth use and brain development.
