This proposed project, Mobilizing for Mental Health: A Project to Raise Awareness, Strengthen Skills, and Maximize Capacity in Indiana, will combine the mental health training experience of Prevention Insights with well-networked community organizers to implement evidence-based mental health training in Indiana. Along with training, this project will include stigma-reducing videos curated for populations of need, an intricate mental health resource and referral list for each county, sustainable practices for training instructors, and an existing infrastructure for data collection.
The geographic catchment area includes 13 counties (rural or partially rural) in Indiana, totaling more than, 1,022,000 residents. Diverse populations to be trained in Mental Health First Aid and Question, Persuade, and Refer include adults who work with youth; individuals who interact with students in higher education, including enrolled students; first responders; veterans and those who interact with or serve veterans; and adults who interact with the general population. This project will train at least 3,500 unduplicated individuals over its tenure--600 in year one, 625 in year two, 675 in year three, 750 in year four and 850 in the final year.
This project has four goals: (1) to reduce rates of depression, suicide, substance abuse, violence, and other behavioral health concerns within selected groups. This will be accomplished by increasing the capacity of trained participants in the catchment area to identify and refer individuals among the populations of focus in need of mental health care (objectives: by 9/29/26, designated trainers will have trained 3,500 individuals in the catchment area, provided at least five trainings to each population of focus in the catchment area, and at least six trainings to each county listed in the catchment area; by 9/29/25, one community member will be trained as an instructor in QPR, and by 9/29/24, one community member will be trained as an instructor in Adult MHFA); (2) to increase the number of individuals from focus populations who receive appropriate mental health services (objectives: by 10/1/21, a referral system will be in place for 100% of participating sites, and by 9/29/26 referrals to appropriate mental health services to the populations of focus will increase by 20% compared to baseline); (3) increase awareness in the catchment area about the mental health resources available for the populations of focus (objectives: by 3/31/22, informational material describing mental health resources available to focus populations will be created and distributed at 100% of trainings); and (4) decrease mental illness stigma within the focus populations and increase awareness of the need for culturally appropriate services for the focus populations in the catchment area (objectives: by 9/29/23, an evidence-based social marketing and awareness campaign will be expanded into the catchment area to address stigma that impacts the focus population, and by 9/29/26, an anti-stigma video related to a focus population will be created).
