The Choose To Be Healthy coalition services southern York County (Berwick, Eliot, Kittery, Lebanon, North Berwick, Ogunquit, South Berwick, Wells, and York), ME, an urban area with a population of 61,000.
The goals of the Coalition are: (1) establish and strengthen collaboration among Choose To Be Healthy's partner organizations in support of the community's effort to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth; and (2) reduce substance abuse among youth in southern York County, ME, and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by addressing the issues in our community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse.
The Coalition will achieve its goals by implementing these strategies:
(1) Reduce youth access and enhance barriers to alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and misuse of prescription drugs through increased and consistent regional police enforcement, merchant education, and unused prescription drug disposal.
(2) Increase access and reduce barriers for youth to receive substance abuse support and treatment and increasing community and parents' ability to support their children's sobriety.
(3) Modify and change policies that help schools and communities counter unhealthy norms around marijuana use, risky drinking, and increase positive consequences for youth to receive support and help for substance abuse.
