As of April 13, 2021, Yuma County has had 36,930 (17.63%) confirmed COVID-19 cases and 824 deaths. Yuma County identified Health Literacy as a common concern among residents with limited English proficiency, (18.5% of the total population, according to the US Census, ACS 2015-2019). The demand for Health Literacy initiatives are exceedingly evident. Through funding from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health/Office of Minority Health, the geographic area served will be the entire County of Yuma; a multi-cultural border community located in the outermost region of Southwest, Arizona. Yuma County Public Health Services District along with community based organizations and multi-sectoral partners will work together in harnessing their collective power to address the concern by creating a Health Literacy and Equity Collaborative. The goals of the Collaborative will be: 1) To build resiliency strategies among the population, leading to overcoming adversity based on race/ethnicity challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic; and 2) To foster the restorative processes among organizations and communities to avoid future adverse health outcomes among minorities and people of color. The multi-sectoral partnership will conduct assessments to develop Health Literacy initiatives and priorities; and will create a strategic action plan for Health Literacy improvement policies. At the end of the project period, generated learning's will be shared, to potentially help other socially vulnerable border communities.
