The Georgia Institute of Technology, in partnership with the Assistive Technology Industry Association, with collaboration from the Assistive Technology (AT) Act Programs from Alaska, Georgia, Guam, Montana, and Texas, proposes the Assistive Tech Network, an online community of practice connecting people with disabilities and older adults, AT providers and social service case managers, and AT industry representatives. Operating as a social media platform moderated by project staff, the community will encourage interactive multi-media dialogues on AT discovery, selection, application, customization, and training. The Assistive Tech Network will contain resources and information on AT products and technical information that have been developed by our partnerships through previous funding, as well as develop new information. Retrospective analysis of partner service databases will prioritize the developing informational resources on the most-used assistive technologies first. Participatory action research methods will be used to identify technology needs, and functions and features of the community desired by the stakeholder group. Cross-referencing product information, technical assistance, and discussion threads using standard terminology will facilitate navigation of the community. The proof-of-product platform will be beta tested by 500 community members over a 15-month period. Exploration and discovery research will quantitatively and qualitatively analyze activities of the community members to identify unique needs that further technology could address, as well as education and training needed for AT users and service providers. Additional research activities will quantify changes in self-advocacy and comfort with using new technologies. The community would be of particular benefit to AT users in geographically isolated areas, or who may be at risk for infectious disease and wish to practice social distancing.
